The current president of Somalia Mohamed Albdullai, extended the mandate of the president and the federal government by two years on Monday 19th/April/2021 in a bid to end a political stalemate over the national elections. In a special session, at least 149 lawmakers voted in favor of the motion, three members rejected it while one member abstained, according to the leadership of the country's lower house of the parliament. Somalia's next elections will be held in two years and will be based on one person, one vote election system, according to a resolution issued by the house speaker.

President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed's four-year term expired in February and his replacement was meant to be chosen by a new crop of legislators. Uncertainty deepened after opponents accused Mohamed of packing regional and national election boards with his own supporters. Somalia, which plunged into civil war in 1991, has been in fresh political crisis since cancelling elections in February. Another opposition politician also said his house was attacked by soldiers allied with Mohamed on Sunday. Former Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in a tweet alleged that forces loyal to the president attacked his house on Sunday, adding that: “I’ve warned and am now repeating how dangerous it is to politicise security. (Mohamed) will shoulder the responsibility of whatever happens as a result of this.” The internal security minister, Hassan Hundubey Jimale, denied the former president’s claim and blamed the attack on “armed militias”. Hassan said government forces responded to the attack and brought it to an end.

According to local Somali sources, last Monday, the lower house of parliament passed legislation to extend Mohamed's tenure by up to two years, the state news agency reported, citing Information Minister Osman Dubbe, and Mohamed signed the bill late on Tuesday. Later, The Somali National News Agency announced that Farhan Mohamed Adan has been appointed as Hassan’s replacement. Somali leaders failed to agree on the election issues and the latest talks between the federal government, five regional leaders and the mayor of Mogadishu ended without any agreement last week. Since the announcement about the two years extension was made, about at least 15 civilians were killed when a minibus ferrying passengers from the capital Mogadishu was blown up by suspected al Shabaab attackers, the government said. This is while the Somalia's main donors said they would not support any extension of the presidency's term. His accusation came as Somali soldiers exchanged gunfire in the streets of the capital Mogadishu, in a sign of deepening splits in the security forces between those supporting an extension of Mohamed's presidential term and those opposed. Analysts say the divisions could distract Somalia's security forces from the fight against al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab insurgents in the Horn of Africa nation.

There are now a lot of worries and fear among the citizens of Somali thinking the situation in the country might actually get worse than what it is right now. There might be separation between different political parties in the government that will lead to separation among people and more chaos. All of this comes back to the two years extension by the current president, As well as triggering opposition in Somalia, Mohamed's term extension has put him on a collision course with foreign donors who support his government in the hope of bringing some stability to Somalia after three decades of chaos. Somalia, which plunged into civil conflict in 1991, has been in contemporary political disaster since cancelling elections in February. In addition to triggering opposition in Somalia, Mohamed’s time period extension has put him on a collision course with overseas donors who assist his authorities within the hope of bringing some stability to Somalia after three a long time of chaos.
